Jakes Gerwel Technical School

The Jakes Gerwel Technical School is a remarkable example of what can be achieved when an entire community unites behind a shared vision. Developed for and by the Bonnievale community, the school was established on a 12-hectare site and delivered in five phases, with construction commencing in June 2017 and the final phase completed in December 2022.

The project was driven by the need to address the shortage of high school facilities in the area while creating meaningful opportunities for young people growing up in challenging circumstances. The vision was to establish a technical high school capable of accommodating up to 1,200 learners, providing access to both mainstream education and practical, technical skills that can equip learners for further education, employment, and entrepreneurship.

A strong spirit of community collaboration was central to the development. Motla Consulting Engineers generously contributed their professional services, while architect Theuns Coetzee provided the architectural plans for the school. Members of the Bonnievale community also contributed towards bringing the vision to life, making the school a true reflection of collective commitment, generosity, and hope.

The school was named in honour of the late Professor Jakes Gerwel, an academic and anti-apartheid activist who himself grew up in a rural farming community and overcame a challenging background. His legacy reflects the school's commitment to creating opportunities through education and empowering young people to reach their full potential.

Today, the school represents a collaborative partnership between the Western Cape Education Department and private contributors. Learners attend without paying school fees and have access to a broad educational programme that combines academic learning with practical and technical training. Character development is also a key component, with mentorship programmes focused on cultivating values such as respect, integrity, self-discipline, and honesty.

Beyond the classroom, the school provides learners with nutritious daily meals, sports facilities, and playing fields that support their physical, social, and personal development. The result is far more than a school—it is a long-term investment in the young people and future of the Bonnievale community.
