Struisbaai School of Skills

The Struisbaai School of Skills was a particularly meaningful project for FBM, reflecting our passion for developments that create lasting and positive impacts within local communities. Through our integrated services, we were able to support the delivery of the project efficiently and within an exceptionally short timeframe. We are proud to have played a role in creating a facility that has been warmly embraced by the Struisbaai community.

The school was established with a clear purpose: to equip learners with practical, relevant, and essential skills that can provide meaningful opportunities beyond the classroom. With South Africa facing high levels of unemployment alongside a significant shortage of practical skills within the economy, the school aims to prepare learners for employment, entrepreneurship, and successful participation in society.

The development is an extension of Struisbaai Primary School and introduced two new skills-based subjects: Civil Maintenance and Food Production. The curriculum also incorporates important life and leadership skills, including value-based leadership, giving learners a broader foundation for both their personal and professional development.

The need for this approach was highlighted by the fact that a significant number of learners who entered Grade 1 at Struisbaai Primary between 2002 and 2006 did not progress through to matric. However, many learners who experienced academic challenges demonstrated a strong aptitude for practical and vocational skills. The School of Skills was therefore developed to recognise these strengths and provide learners with alternative pathways to success.

By developing practical skills that respond to the needs of the local economy, the project seeks to improve employment opportunities, encourage entrepreneurial thinking, and empower young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

FBM is particularly proud that the Struisbaai School of Skills was completed in less than a year, commencing in June 2021 and reaching completion in March 2022. It was a highly rewarding project, and we are honoured to have contributed to a development that continues to provide valuable opportunities for learners and the wider Struisbaai community.
